Akihiko Izukura's World: Nature and Man. Color, Thread, & Form

I first met Izukura sensei during my last semester at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. I was so busy doing my graduation collection, but his work interested me enough to try to work with him now that I have more time. With Paula Rath's gracious recommendation, I was able to become his apprentice, assisting his work here in Hawaii. These photos are from my first week of work.

Paula's beautiful home, where Izukura sensei worked.
We made lunch everyday.
His studio in upper Nu'uanu.
Dying silk worm cocoons.
He crushes them and stick them around objects. The natural protein acts like a glue and after being dried, the object can be extracted, leaving a hollow art object.

Hawaiian Indigo
blueberries, hibiscus, turmeric
My usual workplace.

Hawaiian indigo
top and left fabric - indigo
right - blueberries
From making the fabrics from silk worm cocoons, and growing the silk worms for the cocoons, everything was a natural process. Dying the fabrics was stress free, because nature takes control and you're only there to assist. Every imperfection seems beautiful, just like how your imperfections and mine makes us the perfect imperfections in mother nature's eyes.

"I am always looking to go back to my organic state. "

Schedule:

1st week of August: Big Island - Picking Indigo leaves and setting up the silk worms.

Every 1st week of September through September of 2013: Honolulu - Assisting @ Academy of Arts Workshop.

Mid October 2012: Tokyo - Tokyo Fashion Week
November: Yokohama & Kyoto - Visiting Izukura sensei's Atelier

Busy!

Dear World ( a love letter).

Dear World,

Today I have lived 24 years.
I am a year away from living a century, amidst uncertain and emotional times.
The young and the old inside of me seems to always be at battle,
where I crave for stability and peace, but at the same time seek for adventures and new experiences.
Through my mistakes and rash behaviors, I have survived the heartbreaks of life and found that there is much to love in the world than I had ever dreamed of loving.
Until now.
My future is still surrounded by fogs of glitter and dark smoke,
Promising me boxes full of candies and treasure on the way.
and those boxes consists of you.
No matter how difficult or easy,
smooth or rough,
long or quick,
glamourous or poor,
painful or ecstatic,
fulfilling or disheartening,
I have boxes on the way, full of treasures like yourselves
that I carry and collect through my journey,
in my pocket.
On rainy days, I shall open it and sob in your arms
On sunny days, I will rejoice and shower you in kisses

Regardless of where my destination lies,
it's the journey itself that I share with you
that brings me true happiness and fulfillment.

I am a little bit of every one of you.
I am able to be proud of myself,
only because I am ever so grateful and proud of those around me.
And for that, I thank you.
I thank you from the bottom of my heart,
from the deepest part where both true sorrow and happiness have flowed like a river.

I am you am me am I.
Let this circle of love never leave me or you on the sidelines.

I love you all, ti amo, je t'aime, aishiteru.
Thank you for making my life oh so beautiful and fabulous.
My thanks goes to my friends and family in:
Milano, Firenze, Paris, Tokyo, Honolulu, New York, mainland USA, and Mexico.

xoxo,
Anna.
